On the up we have the TV industry that insists on plugging ever more features, touch less or otherwise, into the old TV set. TechCrunch reports that Cognitive Networks Partners With LG To Bring Interactivity To Smart TVs , so much so that viewers can ''get
discounts, maybe order pizza and other goodies'' while watching their favorite show.
Mobie Industry Review is asking if Nokia Lumia 1020 is finally the phone to redeem Nokia and convert you to the Windows Phone platform. Betting on the camera yet again, the N team promises:

''Unlike any smartphone in the market today the Nokia Lumia 1020 reinvents
zoom, enabling people to discover more detail than the eye can see. With Nokia’s innovative PureView technology, including optical image
stabilization, the device is able to produce some of the sharpest images
possible by any digital camera. [...]
The Nokia Lumia 1020 will arrive first on U.S. shores exclusively
with AT&T, with sales expected to start on July 26 at a price of USD
299.99 on a two-year contract. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is then expected to arrive in China and key
European markets this quarter. Nokia plans to ship an exclusive variant
of the device with Telefonica to select European and Latin American
markets. The Nokia Lumia 1020 will be available in yellow, white and
black.''

The proof is in the pudding and we'll see if Q4 results will confirm the long-awaited wind of change for the Finish company.

Penalty for Apple as China Labor Watch (CLW), a US-based charity, released a report last month, about the working conditions surrounding the production of the new cheap iPhone. ''Apple's unkept promises: Cheap iPhones come at high costs to Chinese workers'' talks about the excessive number of underpaid hours Chinese workers put in to make a living and stresses that the company's statements on tightening control over its outsourced supply chain do not match the reality. Here is also a video accompanying this report:
A collection of SIM based NFC technologies was such one innovation treat that was served for attendees of this year's event. Let's remember what NFC is (source: event's website)

''Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled mobile phones have a huge potential to make our lives easier by letting us, with a simple touch, enable secure access to new transaction and payment services across a range of sectors and industries.''

Using this technology, visitors could benefit from coupons, find locations, make mobile payments and so on. Here is a SONY demonstrating their NFC enabled device:

Getting closer, I realized it was a flyer advertising the institution' s mobile banking and payment services executed in ... an attention grabbing way.

So I decided to look into what are France's biggest banks doing in the area of mobile from a communications stand point. I went on their websites as any potential customer would do when informing him/herself about what's on offer and noted my first impressions, browsed around and here is what I have found:

BNP Paribas

General Presentation: Streaming down from their on line banking strategy, BNP Paribas mobile banking and payment offer is well presented within a dedicated section of the website. It also features a partnership with the mobile operator Orange and offers for customers.

Access: Accessing the mobile section is easy: click on the main website's navigation button ''Mobile''

Service structure: The mobile service gathers under one ''catalogue'' application ''All my Apps'' the mobile banking and the mobile payment services, with supporting functionalities such as auto assistant property damage declaration (via phone call), travel assistant, money transfer, NFC,etc. The partnership with Orange lets clients choose a new package and a handset or a NFC sim card. If you choose to recycle your handset with love2recycle.fr, you get a discount applied to your new phone. You can choose your new handset without leaving the bank's website.

Multimedia: Presence of promo videos, however their soundtrack is a bit distracting from understanding the message, it is assumed that the target audience is the young and hip who can grasp tech savvy offers on the go. The iPhone look alike print flyer is attention grabbing but its cluttered with info and visuals.

Con: My first impression was a bit confusing, it took some time to make sense of it all.

Pro: Comprehensive offer under one umbrella with good user interface. For the mobile payments, integration with Orange and choice of package. Good presentation: what you see is what you get.

Societe Generale:

General presentation: SG 's services have a dedicated ''.mobi'' domain. It seemed to me that practicality was emphasized above fresh, hip packaging which might be a reflection of their target market for this particular service: a cautious, mature customer.

Access: Not so easy if you don't know the .mobi address (which is accessible only from the phone) : societegenerale.mobi. The mobile service is buried within the website and it requires several click throughs.

Service structure: Standard mobile banking functionalities within a downloadable app. A currency converter is a welcomed addition to the basic bundle of your account, savings and expenses, etc.

Multimedia: no distracting soundtrack, a simple, guided tour of the app which I think does its job well.

Con: It seemed too generic.

Pro: Focused to the management of ones account/money. It also indicates the different ways of reaching the service: sms, store, QR, PC. Simple and clear.

Credit Agricole

General presentation: Mobile services labelled as'' My mobile Bank'' dedicated space. Friendly user experience yet simple and clear.

Access: Easy access through a navigation button on the homepage.

Service structure: Offer tailored to the banks main financial and insurance products. In the insurance category, the standalone app allows for taking pictures of the damage done to property and send the declaration via the app. However, unlike in BNP Paribas' s case, apps are individually downloadable (about 6 of them) as opposed to having them under a master-app roof, in one download. Also all of them are Paribas's branded, while CA mobile payment app KWIXO redirects to a 3rd party.

Multimedia: Each app linked to a different location, whether app store or external 3rd party website, on which explanation is provided.

Con: One app wasn't available; six individual downloads instead of merging all in one.

Pro: Simplicity and the picture functionality in the property damage declaration app.

Here is an excerpt from RIM's CEO, Thorsten Heins:

“Our team has been working tirelessly to bring our customers innovative features combined with a best in class browser, a rich application ecosystem, and cutting-edge multimedia capabilities. All of this will be integrated into a user experience – the BlackBerry Flow – that is unlike any smartphone on the market today. Thanks to our strong partnerships with global carriers and a growing ecosystem of developers, we believe our customers will have the best experience possible with BlackBerry 10. We are looking forward to getting BlackBerry 10 in the hands of our customers around the world.”

It will be an uphill battle. Many of BlackBerry's devote followers were forced to switch to other brands such as iPhone and Samsung, even Nokia. I remember one of my friends, who at one time had defended the BlackBerry amidst everything that was going on, has already gone through iPhone 4 and 5 and I am sure will not think twice when a new one comes up for sale. It is time RIM sets on the path of nourishing a new community of devotees and win the ground back.
What can I say, we knew it would be misery all aroundI would have preferred not to see Nokia in this bad position. Another nail in the coffin has been the company`s move to sell its headquarters "as part of disposing of its non-core assets"?! and coupled with Q3 results, the picture doesn`t look good at all. For a complete dissection of Q3 numbers and stats, refer to industry specialist Tomi T Ahonen`s: Communities Dominate Brands: Nokia Q3 Results..
Change Nr. 1: Lenovo overtook HP in worldwide PC shipments for the 1st time in history and grew its market share. The giant HP has lost leadership in this sector, it sold less than Lenovo, though by not too much. Indeed, HP and Lenovo are very close and it is interesting to watch how both companies will respond in the next quarter and in the following year. If Lenovo maintains the momentum and manages to widen the gap and break ahead, than HP`s life will become even more difficult than it already is. To cite Gartner, HP is currently restructuring its device business and its main concern is achieving market share whilst holding its margin. What can I say: apart from diversifying its market channels, Lenovo is winning ground on amongst other, margin.

Change Nr. 2: the PC market continues to decline, its share being eaten up by the tablet and phablet range of products. Gartner estimates a decline of 8% in the third quarter of 2012 and attributes it in part to the arrival of Windows 8 which caused retailers to reduce their inventories in preparation for W8. On a different note, the PC decline is a trend in a fast moving market where more and more mobile devices are competing for the consumers` share of pocket. PC companies are being forced to stay relevant: how they are doing it will define who continues the race and who doesn`t. For detailed info click here.

PS: there is intense speculation on the web that Amazon might be "cooking" its own phone. Opinion: apart from it being a marketing tool and a tremendous data source for its search algorithms, I think the success of a future Amazon branded phone also lies in how Non-Amazon, stand-alone and innovative will it be... after all, we already have the Kindle.

Last time I checked this brand was releasing killer products and was looking like a shining star on the mobile landscape and now it reports drop of profits as much as 79% for this past quarter.

The HTC case has all the characteristics of a success story: from a manufacturer for other brands to breaking through with innovative products under its own brand, HTC climbed steadily and fast. The partnership with China Mobile, China`s biggest mobile operator, the overcoming of grandpa Nokia in market share and becoming the 3rd biggest smartphone producer - achievements that many players in the mobile industry would only wish for.

But it looks like the momentum is slowly fading away. Maybe the company is still adjusting with its 2011 acquisitions, or maybe releasing new models with the Windows OS was not such a good idea considering its popularity versus the Android OS.

It doesn`t seem to make sense: why would you switch to Windows when Android is so popular and growing and when you yourself shared this popularity by being one of the pioneers of the Android-based smartphones, as BBC puts it?

For current slowdown, critics cite the lack of what made HTC a force to reckon with in the first place: sharp innovation and design and new hit models to still the spot away from Apple and Samsung.

Others blame a weak mobile system with limited partners and channels to market. Whatever the cause is, it needs to be acted upon fast, if not, it would be a shame to witness such potential go to market obscurity and waste.

BBC News - HTC profits slide 79% as competition stiffens:
I was still in college, and back then, the most popular social platform was Hi5 or something similar. Soon though the question "Are you on Hi5?" was replaced with "Are you on Facebook?". One of my friends wrote an article in the student newspaper about this new, addictive social site. The piece proved popular, just like the network. Facebook was taking over Europe and over our social lives.

Some years down the road, we saw Facebook going through privacy issues, then through the public offering and all the problems that came with that. If you ask me whether I spend 100$ on products advertised on the platform, the answer is "no". If you ask my close Facebook friends the same question, the answer remains "no". All in all, I begun to spend less and less time on the platform, simply because I stopped having so much free time as I was out of college and in the professional world.

But then sometimes life reshuffles your playlist and after a good song comes a bad one and you turn to your support network: family, friends, good acquaintances. And it also turns out that they are now mostly all on Facebook. I found myself looking at my 300+ friend list, remembering good times, picking out some names, getting their latest updates, and writing a couple of messages.

All I want to say is that I`ll have to think twice about deleting my Facebook account but from reasons other than some monetary value.

From the Press Release:
